Join us on a journey into the New ‘2 Storey’ Key Stage 1 Library Space we created for William Shrewsbury Primary School – click the Image Thumbnails & take a closer look…

Like most schools, they had a lack of space, but desperately needed more space for their Key Stage 1 Library, but they could not afford to pay for an extension to be built.

Fortunately, their existing Library had a high ceiling, which meant we could build a bespoke Studio, complete with 2 Upstairs areas for Teachers and Children to use for training purposes, and at the same time create a library on the ground floor using our new Vision display units.

At the top of the staircase, which comes complete with handrail, that can be painted to suit your room, you can enter the left or right hand rooms – which can be fitted out with foldaway tables for the children to use as and when required.

As shown in this example, lots more useable space was created, which can be used by all the school children, and the teaching staff.

Power points and Internet facilities were also fitted later into their new space, to create a new Teacher training room.

– NEW ‘UPSTAIRS’ STUDIO AND TRAINING ROOMS –

Our new mezzanine, The Reading Maze, is a calm oasis for staff, parents and children to enjoy books together. The castle-like structure is very impressive and a focal point of interest for visitors to the school.

It is a well laid out space with the books being easily visible and accessible so that families can easily select books to borrow when they use the area after school. We have furnished it with beanbags and cushions for the children to use so they can ‘get lost in a book’.

The lower floor is used to support a variety of reading activities including one to one, guided reading and reading to our local ‘Reading Dog’!

During the school day, the upper floor of the mezzanine is used for many areas of the curriculum including writing, maths, small group work and personalised interventions. We can also use these multipurpose spaces for PPA and small meeting groups. The children really enjoy going up the wooden stairs to work on the top floor area.

We have been delighted with the finished product and it has offered excellent value for money. Not only do we now have a very attractive library space, but we have also doubled the working areas in the room and this has benefited both children and adults in the school.

A Wonderful New World of Learning ‘Downstairs’

As you can see, we have installed a central staircase connecting upstairs and downstairs, splitting the library zones in two, with a library passage behind the staircase downstairs, allowing for movement all the way round.

We have also fitted conventional fixed storage shelves and Vision display units for the books, incorporating different shaped windows to make the most of the light in the room and to enable children and teachers to see through the round, square, triangle or cross shaped windows.

The studio was also fitted with integrated LED lights to create a bright & cosy atmosphere…

As we did not want to block up the door that lead to the storage room, we incorporated a Movable NOMAD display unit to create a continued display of books, which could easily be moved when access to the storage cupboard was required.

Storage under the stairs was not wasted either, with a fixed Nomad we were able to create even more storage, along with a safety access gate, to prevent the younger, smaller children from climbing the stairs without supervision.
